Sonication

Sonication is a procedure in which ultrasound is used to dislodge biofilm from implants. Sonication is particularly useful for chronic low-grade infections in which only a small number of bacteria are present and the biofilm adheres more strongly to the implant surface. Sonication fluid is suitable for aerobic and anaerobic cultures, as well as for newer culture-independent detection methods such as molecular methods, mass spectrometry, and microcalorimetry1.
