Solitary fibrous tumors and hemangiopericytomas were combined in the 2016 WHO classification and are now referred to as solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT/HPC)1 2. This is a mesenchymal tumor of fibroblastic type3.
Epidemiology
SFT/HPCs are rare tumors and account for approximately ~ 0.4% of all primary CNS tumors4.
Pathology
To confirm the diagnosis of a solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma, immunohistochemical detection of nuclear STAT6 expression is recommended5.
WHO classification
Solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma (SFT/HPC) are classified as WHO grade 1–3 tumors6:
- WHO grade 1: Hypocellular, collagenized tumor with a classic solitary fibrous tumor phenotype.
- WHO grade 2: Denser than WHO grade 1, with fewer than 5 mitoses per 10 high-power fields (10 HPF, high-power fields).
- WHO grade 3: As grade 2, but with ≥ 10 mitoses per 10 high-power fields (10 HPF, high-power fields)
