A Redon drain is a suction drain used to drain wound exudate. The improved drainage of wound exudate thus achieved reduces the wound area and leads to accelerated wound healing.
Neurosurgical relevance
In neurosurgery, Redon drains are used primarily in procedures involving the Spine and, less frequently, in cranial procedures. In cranial procedures, the drain is inserted over the calvaria. In spinal procedures in which the Dura has been opened, either no drain should be inserted or the suction should be discontinued, as the negative pressure can otherwise result in a Remote cerebellar hemorrhage as a complication[^1].
