Pronator drift test

The pronator drift test is a clinical examination method used to assess symmetrical muscle function and strength in the upper extremities. This simple, noninvasive test enables rapid identification of findings suggestive of certain neurological or muscular impairments[^1].

Performance

To perform the pronator drift test, the patient is asked to close their eyes and raise both arms in front of the body to shoulder height. During this maneuver, the palms face upward. This position should be maintained for a certain period of time.

Interpretation

The pronator drift test is considered pathological if one or both arms drift downward or if pronation of the palms is observed. Such a finding may indicate weakness in the corresponding muscle groups or neurological deficits. The test is particularly valuable for assessing gross strength in the upper extremity.

Limitations

Interpretation of the results may be influenced by various factors, such as patient fatigue, inadequate instructions, or lack of motivation. In addition, the test is less suitable for identifying fine motor deficits or mild asymmetries in muscle strength.
