Palinopsia refers to the persistence or reoccurrence of visual images after the stimulus has been removed from the visual field[^1]. Palinopsia can occur with or without deficits in the visual field.
Etiology
Palinopsia is typically attributed to a lesion in the non-dominant occipitotemporal cortex. Most cases of palinopsia due to occipital lesions are associated with a visual field defect[^2].
Examples of possible causes for palinopsia include:
Stroke[^3]
Infectious causes, such as in the context of an abscess[^4]
