Massive transfusion

The term massive transfusion is defined as the replacement of at least one blood volume or more with blood products in an adult within less than 24 hours. In the pediatric population, massive transfusion is defined as the replacement of at least twice the circulating blood volume within less than 24 hours. In a pediatric patient, approximately 1.5× the circulating blood volume can be replaced before coagulation problems occur1.
