Ligamenta transversa

The ligamenta transversa are located in the spine and extend as reinforcing ligaments from the posterior edge of the inferior articular processes to the lateral edge of the superior articular processes1. They limit the range of motion of the vertebral joints by becoming progressively taut during flexion and extension as well as lateral flexion, thereby generating a limiting counterforce. During rotation, they restrict the dorsal displacement of the respective ipsilateral inferior articular process2. In the lumbar spine, the ligamenta transversa are particularly well developed.
