Indigo carmine is a blue dye used medically.

Neurosurgical use

Indigo carmine can be used for intrathecal administration to localize a Cerebrospinal fluid leak.

Dosage

Case reports in the literature describe that an injection of 5ml 0.6 % indigo carmine results in a blue-green discoloration of the Cerebrospinal fluid[^1]. The effect lasts for up to 5 hours, and renal excretion occurs[^1].
