Hippocampus

The hippocampus is located on the inner edge of the temporal lobe and is a central relay station of the limbic system.
Anatomy
The hippocampus lies in the temporal lobe and borders the inferior horn of the lateral ventricle laterally. Rostrally lies the amygdaloid body. The caudal end of the corpus callosum forms the posterior superior boundary. With the fornix, it runs in an arc beneath the corpus callosum to the mammillary bodies[^1].
Function
The hippocampus is essential for transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. Bilateral hippocampal damage leads to pronounced anterograde amnesia[^2].
