Gadolinium is a chemical element with the symbol Gd and atomic number 64. In the periodic table, it is classified in the lanthanide group and is therefore also considered a rare-earth metal.
Clinical relevance
Gadolinium is a component of most commonly used contrast agents for MRI imaging, such as Gadobutrol (Gadovist). A study investigating the safety and tolerability of Gadovist demonstrated very good tolerability[^1] in clinical use.
