Disseminated intravascular coagulation, or DIC for short, is a coagulopathy caused by intravascular activation of blood coagulation. It leads to increased consumption of plasma coagulation factors and platelets, followed by a deficiency of these components. Therefore, DIC is also commonly referred to as consumptive coagulopathy.
Clinical relevance
In neurosurgery, consumptive coagulopathy can be the cause of a nontraumatic subdural hematoma[^1] [^2].
