Cushing syndrome is a metabolic disorder caused by an excess of glucocorticoids such as cortisol.
Clinical presentation
The following symptoms may occur as part of Cushing syndrome1:
- General: overweight and arterial hypertension
- Skin: hirsutism, plethora, purple linear stretch marks (striae), acne
- Neuromuscular: lethargy, weakness (proximal myopathy), and osteopenia
- Gonadal: menstrual irregularities, decreased libido, impotence
- Metabolic: diabetes mellitus, glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, polyuria, kidney stones
- Psychiatric: emotional distress, depression, euphoria, psychosis
