Synonyms: Cisterna

The cisterns (cisternae) are cerebrospinal fluid-filled expansions of the subarachnoid space. The ventricular system forms the internal cerebrospinal fluid system, whereas the cerebral cisterns, together with the subarachnoid space, form the external cerebrospinal fluid system of the brain.
