Chemosis is swelling of the conjunctiva of the eye. The conjunctiva becomes elevated in a blister-like manner from the underlying sclera. It is characterized by a whitish, glassy or intensely red, ridge-like swelling of the conjunctiva that may protrude from the palpebral fissure and can even partially cover the cornea.
Neurosurgical relevance
Carotid-cavernous fistulas can cause chemosis[^1].
