Baclofen

Synonyms
Lioresal

Baclofen is a medication belonging to the class of muscle relaxants.

Uses

It is used to treat muscle spasticity in disorders of the central nervous system. Baclofen can be administered orally or intrathecal. Intrathecal administration usually takes place continuously via an implanted pump, which must be refilled at regular intervals[^1].

Mechanism of action

The effects are based on inhibition of excitatory transmission in the Spinal cord through stimulation of GABA-B receptors. This inhibits the release of the excitatory amino acids glutamate and aspartate. The half-life of baclofen is between 3 and 4 hours.
