Aspirin

Synonyms
Acetylsalicylsäure

Taking Aspirin causes irreversible impairment of platelet aggregation.

Surgical risk in neurosurgical procedures

To minimize the risk of bleeding during neurosurgical procedures, discontinuation of Aspirin approximately five days before the procedure is recommended to allow sufficient production of new, functioning platelets. A 2017 meta-analysis indicates that there is no significant risk of perioperative complications during spinal neurosurgical procedures in patients taking Aspirin[^1]. In most cases, resuming Aspirin a few days after the procedure is reasonable.
