In cases of asomatognosia, patients are unable to recognize their own body parts as belonging to their body, perceiving them as foreign. Patients may report feelings that the affected limb is missing or has disappeared[^1]. Asomatognosia is a specific form of agnosia and belongs to the somatosensory agnosias.
Cause
Asomatognosia occurs due to a larger lesion in the temporoparietal region, typically in the right hemisphere. Additional involvement of the orbitofrontal cortex can lead to somatoparaphrenia[^2].
