According to a publication by Vincent Traynelis et al.[^1] from 1986, atlanto-occipital dislocations can be classified into three different types.

Type | Description |
Type I | Anterior dislocation of the occiput relative to the Atlas. |
Type II | Longitudinal dislocation (distraction). |
Type III | Posterior dislocation of the occiput relative to the atlas. |
