Atlanto-occipital dislocations can be classified into three different types, according to a publication from 1986 by Vincent Traynelis et al.[^1].

Type

Description

Type I

Anterior dislocation of the occiput relative to the atlas.

Type II

Longitudinal dislocation (distraction).

Type III

Posterior dislocation of the occiput relative to the atlas.
