The Modified Ashworth Scale is used for the clinical grading of spasticity into 6 different grades[^1]:
Grade | Description |
Grade 0 | No increase in muscle tone. |
Grade 1 | Slight increase in muscle tone, manifested by a catch and release or by minimal resistance at the end of the range of motion when the limb is moved in flexion or extension. |
Grade 2 | Slight increase in muscle tone, manifested by a catch followed by minimal resistance throughout the remainder of the range of motion. The limb is nevertheless easily moved. |
Grade 3 | More marked increase in muscle tone through most of the range of motion. However, the affected limbs are easily moved. |
Grade 4 | Considerable increase in muscle tone. Passive movement is difficult. |
Grade 5 | The affected limb is rigid in flexion or extension. |
