A commonly used classification for fractures of the occipital condyle is the Anderson and Montesano classification, which was published in 1988 [^1].
Classification
Fracture type | Description |
Type I | Comminution of the occipital condyle due to axial force. Minimal or no displacement of the fracture fragments into the foramen magnum. |
Type II | Fracture of the occipital condyle as an extension of a fracture at the foramen magnum. Most likely caused by direct force applied to the skull. |
Type III | Avulsion of the occipital condyle due to the alar ligament. Most likely as a result of rotation and/or lateral flexion of the head. Unstable fracture. |
