Synonyms: Winged scapula

Scapula alata refers to the unilateral or bilateral wing-like protrusion of the scapula from the thorax.

Etiology

Scapula alata can result from idiopathic, iatrogenic, or traumatic causes that lead to weakness or paralysis of the Musculus serratus anterior, the rhomboid muscles, or the trapezius muscle. The Nervus thoracicus longus is the most common site of a lesion resulting in paralysis of the serratus anterior muscle and causing medial scapular winging[^1].
