The term Pterion refers to a location at the Sutura sphenoparietalis, where the Os frontale, the Os parietale, the Os temporale, and the Os sphenoidale are in close proximity.

Anatomy

The following bony structures are involved in the Pterion:

  • Os frontale

  • Os parietale

  • Ala major ossis sphenoidalis

  • Pars squamosa ossis temporalis

The exact location of the Pterion is subject to variability[^1].

Clinical Relevance

The Pterion is an important anatomical landmark in neurosurgery. At the Pterion, the pterional craniotomy is performed, giving it its name.
