The occipital lobe lies superior to the tentorium cerebelli and borders the parietal lobe and the temporal lobe anteriorly. It is separated from the parietal lobe by the parieto-occipital sulcus.
Gyri
The lingual gyrus is located on the caudal surface of the occipital lobe, with the cuneus situated superior to it.
Sulci
The occipital lobe is traversed by the transverse occipital sulcus and the deep calcarine sulcus. Together with the parieto-occipital sulcus, the calcarine sulcus forms the boundaries of the cuneus.
Function
Functionally, the occipital lobe contains, among other structures, the primary and secondary visual cortices.
