The nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami (VIM) is a functionally significant nucleus of the ventrolateral thalamus. It serves as a central relay station for cerebellothalamic pathways and plays an essential role in the regulation and coordination of movement.
Clinical relevance
The nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami is used as the target point in essential tremor for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)[^1][^2]. The VIM is located about 6 mm anterior to the posterior commissure[^3]. Posterior to the VIM are the sensory areas of the thalamus, and lateral to the VIM is the posterior limb of the internal capsule. Overstimulation can therefore trigger sensory and motor side effects during deep brain stimulation, depending on electrode placement.
