ICD-10: B58.2

Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite can infect birds, mammals, and humans as intermediate hosts. The definitive host of this parasite is the cat, in whose intestine it reproduces. Neurotoxoplasmosis refers to toxoplasmosis with intracranial involvement.

Risk Factors

Patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy or with AIDS are at high risk for severe Toxoplasma infections, either due to a new infection or reactivation of latent organisms1.

Imaging

On CT and MRI, one or more lesions with ring enhancement are seen; these may later calcify2.

Cerebellar neurotoxoplasmosis MRI
MRI imaging of a patient with confirmed neurotoxoplasmosis. Axial T2 sequence and T1 sequence with contrast.
