The paired alar ligaments are part of the ligamentous apparatus in the region of the craniovertebral joints.

Anatomy

The alar ligaments originate at the dens and extend to the ipsilateral occipital condyle.

Function

The alar ligaments serve to stabilize the craniovertebral junction during rotational movements1.
