Inferior frontal sulcus

The inferior frontal sulcus is a longitudinal sulcus located in the frontal lobe.

Anatomy

The inferior frontal sulcus separates the middle frontal gyrus from the inferior frontal gyrus. The inferior frontal sulcus exhibits several small interruptions, attributed to the connections between the middle frontal gyrus and the inferior frontal gyrus. Additionally, smaller lateral connections of the inferior frontal sulcus extend into the inferior frontal gyrus[^1]. Posteriorly, the inferior frontal sulcus transitions into the inferior part of the precentral sulcus.

Function

Functional imaging studies have shown activations in the posterior area of the inferior frontal sulcus, at the transition to the inferior precentral sulcus, for tasks involving verbal working memory and cognitive control[^2] [^3].
