Heel walking

Synonyms
Hackengang

Heel walking, also referred to as walking on the heels, is a gait pattern in which the heels serve as the points of contact with the ground.

Clinical relevance

Heel walking can be used to assess gait under more challenging conditions. Pareses compensated for during normal walking can thereby be detected. For example, heel walking is not possible in cases of severe paralysis of the L5 spinal nerve.
