The dissector is a frequently used surgical instrument. Dissectors have an oval tip that may be blunt, sharp, or toothed.
Neurosurgical Dissectors
In neurosurgery, many dissectors are named after their developers. The best known include:
Penfield dissector: A classic series of double-ended dissectors, numbered 1 to 5. The Penfield dissector is named after Wilder G. Penfield (1891–1976)[^1].
Rhoton dissector: A collection of very fine micro-dissectors named after the neurosurgeon Albert Rhoton. They are specifically designed for delicate dissection under microscopic magnification.
Freer dissector: A frequently used, spatula-shaped instrument often used for dissection without a microscope.
