Craniectomy

Craniectomy refers to the surgical removal of portions of the calvaria. In contrast to craniotomy, the calvaria is not replaced after surgery in a craniectomy.

Indications

  • Reduction of intracranial pressure: Craniectomy is performed, for example, when additional intracranial space is required, such as in the setting of a space-occupying infarction, hemorrhage, or cerebral edema.

  • Infection: In postoperative infections involving the bone flap, it may be necessary to remove it to promote resolution of the infection.
