Coccyx

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

The coccyx forms the lowest part of the spinal column. It consists of 3-5 rudimentary vertebrae, the coccygeal vertebrae, of which the first three usually bear recognizable remnants of joint and transverse processes[^1].

Clinical Relevance

The relevance in neurosurgery is very low, as there are no nerve roots exiting at this level that could potentially be compressed. Fractures in this area are usually treated conservatively. In selective cases, a coccydynia may warrant a coccygectomy to be performed.
