The blood-brain barrier is the selective physiological barrier between the fluid compartments of the circulatory system and the central nervous system.
Imaging
The integrity of the blood-brain barrier can be visualized on MRI. When the blood-brain barrier is intact, MRI contrast agents do not cross into the brain tissue. If the blood-brain barrier is disrupted, contrast enhancement in the brain tissue can be detected1.
