The Engel classification was published by Engel J. in 1993[^1] and is used to classify postoperative outcomes after an epilepsy surgery procedure.
Classification
Engel Class | Description |
Class IA | Completely seizure-free since the procedure. |
Class IB | Non-disabling simple partial seizures since the procedure. |
Class IC | Some disabling seizures after the procedure, but free of disabling seizures for at least 2 years. |
Class ID | Generalized seizures only with discontinuation of antiepileptic medication. |
Class II | Rare disabling seizures ("almost seizure-free"). |
Class IIA | Initially free of disabling seizures, but now rare seizures. |
Class IIB | Rare disabling seizures since the procedure. |
Class IIC | More than rare disabling seizures since the procedure, but rare seizures in the last 2 years. |
Class IID | Nocturnal seizures only. |
Class III | Worthwhile improvement |
Class IIIA | Worthwhile improvement in seizures |
Class IIIB | Prolonged seizure-free intervals for more than half of the follow-up period, but not less than 2 years. |
Class IV | No worthwhile improvement |
Class IVA | Significant reduction in seizures |
Class IVB | No relevant change |
Class IVC | Worsening of seizures |
