The iliohypogastric nerve is a nerve of the lumbar plexus and arises from the segments of Th12 and L1.
Anatomy
The iliohypogastric nerve initially runs along the inner side of the quadratus lumborum muscle over the dorsal surface of the kidney and then between the transversus abdominis muscle and the internal oblique abdominis muscle[^1].
Function
The iliohypogastric nerve is involved in the innervation of the broad abdominal muscles. It gives off two cutaneous branches, of which the lateral cutaneous branch supplies the lateral hip region and the anterior cutaneous branch pierces the aponeurosis of the external oblique abdominis muscle cranial to the superficial inguinal ring and supplies the skin in this area as well as the pubic region[^1].
