The genitofemoral nerve originates from the lumbar plexus (segment L1 to L2) and carries general somatosensory and somatomotor fibers.
Anatomy
The genitofemoral nerve divides into two branches, the genital branch and the femoral branch, either in or on the psoas muscle.
Genital Branch
The genital branch runs in the abdominal wall above the inguinal ligament through the inguinal canal and reaches the scrotum with the spermatic cord in males or the labia majora with the round ligament of the uterus in females. The genital branch innervates the cremaster muscle and provides sensory supply to the skin of the scrotum or labia majora and the corresponding skin region of the thigh[^1].
Femoral Branch
The femoral branch runs below the inguinal ligament and becomes subcutaneous in the saphenous hiatus. The femoral branch supplies the skin of the thigh lateral to the area of the genital branch[^1].
