Synonyms: Ligamentum apicis dentis

The apical ligament connects the odontoid with the foramen magnum.

Function

Biomechanically, it provides additional stability against traction forces.

Clinical Relevance

The apical ligament has very little neuroanatomical and biomechanical significance. The apical ligament is only present in a portion of the population and is absent in about 20% of cases[^1].
